New Features and Performance Enhancements in Pervasive.SQL 2000/2000i

Pervasive.SQL 2000/2000i is not simply a "refresh" of previous generations, but delivers new features and flexibility for your environment.

A free upgrade to Pervasive.SQL 2000, Pervasive.SQL 2000i is available as Service Pack 3 to all Pervasive.SQL 2000 users. Pervasive.SQL 2000i is currently available for the Workstation, Workgroup, Windows NT/2000, Server Linux Server and NetWare Server platforms. To see a list of new features between Pervasive.SQL 2000 and Pervasive.SQL 2000i, click here.

Workgroup Engine

Pervasive.SQL Workgroup is a new member to the Pervasive.SQL family. Designed expressly for the small workgroup environment, Pervasive.SQL Workgroup delivers client/server performance to the Win32 workstation environment. This level of performance at the workgroup level is due to our new architecture that replaces MEFS, providing greater performance and configuration flexibility.

A New ODBC Interface

A strong proponent of industry standards, Pervasive.SQL 2000/2000i includes a redesigned ODBC interface, providing you with a full featured, powerful, relational access method to your data.

A New 100% Java JDBC Driver

The new JDBC driver in Pervasive.SQL 2000/2000i gives developers the benefit of a standard data interface, remote data access, and support across all platforms supporting the JVM. The driver supports all the syntax and data types supported by Pervasive.SQL 2000, including long binary and character datatypes. It also supports stored procedure calls and transactions, and is thread safe.

OLE DB

Pervasive.SQL 2000/2000i provides support for OLE DB and ADO developers with a new full featured OLE DB provider.

Distributed Tuning Interface (DTI)

This new feature, introduced in Pervasive.SQL 2000 gives you the opportunity to control the database engine from within your application, taking embedded database deployments to a new level. Implemented as a 32-bit DLL, DTI provides the developer with full access to the engine at four levels

  • Connection - Start and stop Pervasive.SQL services on remote servers.
  • Configuration - Set database engine settings locally or on remote servers.
  • Monitoring - Retrieve engine statistics and resource usage, such as the files open on a server or the clients currently connected to it.
  • Cataloging - Manage database schema and dictionary information such as database names, table names, table properties, data dictionary information and the ability to drop and create tables and dictionaries.

Increased Performance

Pervasive.SQL 2000/2000i delivers major performance increases over Btrieve 6.15 and even over Pervasive.SQL 7. Due to improvements at the Microkernel level, performance gains of up to 10x that of Btrieve 6.15 can be attained. Relational performance has also been increased, providing 2x faster relational data access over Pervasive.SQL 7.

In addition, "out-of-box" performance in a Server configuration has also been improved due to Pervasive.SQL's new Dynamic Cache Configuration feature. Pervasive.SQL 2000i automatically determines the amount of available memory to be used for caching based on available server memory.

Administrative-level server security

Improved security provides tighter control over access to server-engine configuration and monitoring.

Updated Utilities

Pervasive.SQL 2000 delivers new utilities for the Win 32bit environments along with the new Pervasive Control Center that provides you with one central console for all the database management. The Pervasive Control Center comes populated with interfaces to all the Pervasive.SQL utilities, but allows you to customize it to reflect your needs by adding or removing other applications, tools, or utilities.

What's New in Pervasive.SQL 2000i

In addition to the new features found in Pervasive.SQL 2000, Pervasive.SQL 2000i drives forward the value proposition of the Pervasive.SQL 2000 database engine.

Pervasive System Analyzer (PSA) - Designed to simplify deployment and troubleshooting, the PSA reduces the time and effort required due to component management. It allows you to delete, archive, or roll back previous engine installations quickly and easily.

Auto Reconnect - Capabilities between the client requesters and the server engines, allows Pervasive.SQL 2000i to seamlessly reconnect to the server in case of minor network errors or outages.

Row Level Locking - On Data and Key pages provide increased reliability and performance.

Enhanced SQL Syntax - Pervasive.SQL 2000i delivers over 40 new Scalar functions and a richer SQL syntax.

OLE DB 2.5 - Full support for the OLE DB 2.5 (ICommand and IRowset) standard.

JDBC 2.0 - 100% pure Java JDBC 2.0 Level IV driver.

Improved support for Terminal Server - Allows you to install the Server engine and client requesters together on the same Terminal Server.

Improved support for Cluster environments - Allows you to install Pervasive.SQL 2000i into native NetWare and Windows NT Clusters.

Client and Server engine version independence - Simplifies the deployment model and reduces the effort required to deploy future releases of the database engine and requesters.
