Course Instructor: Rick Sanders CPP, CPT
Course Developer: Goldstar Software
Level: Beginning to Intermediate
Length: 3 Day
Course Materials: 200+ page, Two-Sided, Color Printed Manual with CDROM and Quick Reference Card.
Course Objectives: This course is designed to provide a technical foundation to software developers, network administrators and consultants who work with the Btrieve and Pervasive.SQL database engines and other related products from Pervasive Software. The course manuals are designed to act as a reference for the student after the class is completed. While we use the current version of Pervasive.SQL for this course, the material is relevant to Pervasive.SQL 2000i and newer engines.
Day 1 concentrates on the background and server installation and configuration. After Day 1, each student should be able to:
- Describe the Pervasive.SQL database, its history, its components, and why it is often used.
- Identify the various versions and build numbers of Btrieve and Pervasive.SQL engines.
- Differentiate between the various platforms (Workstation, WorkGroup, and Client/Server) and know when to use each.
- Install and patch the Pervasive.SQL software on a server and a client.
- Configure the MKDE for all platforms for one or multiple applications and then fine-tune the engine configuration for optimal performance.
- Configure the Pervasive client on the workstation for fastest startup times and best control.
- Interpret the messages in the server-side error logs and perform other routine maintenance.
Day 2 examines the workstation part of the products in detail, including the "Big Picture" discussion. It also covers the all-important issues of the database file system, including rebuilding, recovering data, and backing up data files. After Day 2, each student should be able to:
- Understand the necessary DLL requirements for the multitude of 16-bit and 32-bit Windows engine and requester configurations.
- Determine the proper placement of DLL’s in your specific environment and resolve problems which arise as a result of an incorrect file.
- Interpret the messages in the workstation-side error logs and perform system cleanups.
- Explain the purpose of each of the provided utilites and know when to use each for troubleshooting various types of problems.
- Identify the basic components of an MKDE database file.
- Rebuild a data file from one version to another, using text or GUI tools.
- Analyze a data file for corruption and repair basic corruption.
- Understand the perils of backing up during database access and enable proper backups in 24x7 operations (This discussion often includes a sidebar evaluation of DataExchange and other options for fault tolerance, depending on available time.)
Day 3 concentrates on the relational part of Pervasive.SQL, covering the importance of data dictionary files, the use of basic SQL commands to retrieve and export data, and the many facets of database security, including owner names, SQL logins, and Pervasive.SQL V8.5 security options. After Day 3, each student should be able to:
- Identify the key Data Dictionary Files (DDF's) and their contents.
- Use the provided tools to build and/or modify DDF's for the database.
- Understand the concepts behind the Pervasive ODBC drivers and access a Pervasive.SQL database with those drivers.
- Create simple SQL statements to retrieve data, modify data, and delete data.
- Create more complex SQL code, including database joins, stored procedures, and views.
- Enable and work with security for Btrieve applications, SQL databases.
- Activate the new security features of Pervasive.SQL V8.5 to protect a database.
- Resolve common status code error messages from applications.
Course Prerequisites: Student should have advanced knowledge about installing and maintaining applications in Windows, Windows 9x, and/or Windows NT/2000/XP/2003. Experience in computer networking, with NetWare and/or Windows NT Server experience will be a great asset, but is not required. An understanding of database technology and programming techniques will also be beneficial.
Certification Test: This course contains information pertinent to the Certified Pervasive Technician test. Students who sign up to take this test, either before or during the class session, can do so at a 50% discount.
